Died in jail or a lockup
Henry Coleman, Jr.
Henry Coleman, Jr., a Black man, was held in a jail in Louisiana when a mob took him from the jail and lynched him in 1893. The Star's report places the town as Kenton in one passage and Benton in another, and gives no exact date. The Middleburgh Post's brief report names Denton as the town and says a group of men took him from the jail and lynched him, with no details of the mob. Neither account says whether jail officers resisted, gave up the keys, or handed him over.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody
