Hawley

died November 26, 1880 · Salem city County, Virginia

Hawley married Nannie Hawkins, the mother of their two children, in a ceremony performed by Rev. R. A. Goodwin, and he wanted their children to bear his name. While held in the jail at Salem, Virginia, he had a last meeting with his brother Peter, who was held in the same cell, and the newspaper said he was calm and thanked the officers who had charge of him. He was hanged on a scaffold behind the court-house in 1880 in the presence of officials and a minister, and in a statement read there he expressed regret for taking a life, asked forgiveness and forgave those who had wronged him. The Daily Dispatch reported that death followed the fall without a struggle and that his body was given to friends for burial.
