Hart, a Black man, was being held in Mayor Young's office in Corinth, Mississippi. According to the Macon Beacon, a shot was fired when an officer moved to restrain him, and he ran from the office and took refuge in a house. The paper reports that officers and citizens set the house on fire, and that he was shot to death as he came out. Accounts of who fired the fatal shots and why are not given in the report.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by staff. Officers shot him to death as he tried to escape from a house after it was set on fire.
