Harrison Johnson

died December 28, 1889 · Barnwell County, South Carolina

Harrison Johnson, a Black man, was held in the Barnwell jail in South Carolina. On the morning of Saturday, December 28, 1889, a masked mob came to the jail, and the jailer, Neville, said the mob took his keys and forced him ahead of them inside. The Evening Journal reports that Johnson was then marched through town and shot to death, and the account is incomplete in the surviving page. The paper describes him as held as a witness rather than as a prisoner.
