Harold Lamont Otey
Harold Lamont Otey was executed by electric chair at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln on the night of September 2, 1994, the first execution in Nebraska since 1959. About 1,000 people gathered outside the prison that night, with supporters and opponents of the death penalty holding separate vigils. His mother asked the governor for clemency, and the governor later said he had to look her in the eyes and turn down her son's appeal. The execution led the state to move later executions to mid-morning.
