Hardy

Shelby County, Iowa

Hardy was being held in the jail in Harlan, Shelby County, Iowa, in 1883. According to the San Marcos Free Press, a group of 30 to 100 men came to the jail between 1 and 2 a.m., and when a deputy objected, they took the keys. The men took Hardy from his cell, and his body was later found in the river below the bridge, riddled with bullets and with marks of a rope on the neck. A dispatch from Harlan reported him as shot and hanged, and the paper suggested he had been thrown from the bridge and shot at the same time.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A dispatch from Harlan, as printed in the newspaper, says a mob took him from the Shelby County jail and shot and hanged him, with rope marks on his neck.

Reported by: Harlan dispatch, as reported in the newspaper (reporters).
