Hank Dodge
Hank Dodge was held in the Nebraska City jail in Nebraska when masked men entered the building and shot him three times, once in the eye, with the bullet reported to have ranged toward the brain. A guard, Peter Maguire, says a dozen men overpowered him, forced the jail and reached Dodge's cell. Other prisoners say Maguire opened the cell doors, that only three men did the shooting, and that no alarm was raised for two hours. Dodge died three days later. These accounts come from a single 1876 newspaper report, and the guard's version and the prisoners' version conflict.
