Deaths in Custody
Died in jail or a lockup

Guy Duffy

54 years old · died July 2015 · Essex County Correctional Facility, Essex County, Massachusetts

Guy Duffy, a retired sign maker from North Andover, was held at the Essex County jail in Middleton on a 30-day sentence in July 2015. He told his wife, Laurie, that he feared he would die there, and she said he suffered from depression and anxiety. The Boston Globe reports that he was moved between the infirmary, a mental health watch and segregation before being placed alone in a single cell, where he hanged himself. The jail's mortality review concluded that staff responded appropriately, but the Globe reports questions about why he was sent to segregation after showing mental health issues.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (disputed; neglect alleged). The Essex County jail mortality review ruled the death a suicide by hanging and found staff responded appropriately, but Duffy's wife and the reporting raise questions about why he was moved to segregation after showing mental health problems.

Reported by: Essex County jail mortality review (the agency that held him); The Eye (reporters).
