Gunn

died January 14, 1931 · Nodaway County, Missouri

Raymond Gunn was held in the custody of Sheriff England in Maryville, Missouri, when a mob took him on January 14, 1931. The sheriff was handcuffed to Gunn at the time, and the mob put a chain around Gunn's neck and marched him to a schoolhouse. Men soaked the building with kerosene, placed him on the roof and set it alight, and he died in the smoke before the roof collapsed. Sheriff England said he was sick from shock and a wrenched arm, and he denied reports that Gunn was tortured on the way. National Guardsmen kept at the armory were not called to give aid.
