Gregory
Gregory was held in the county jail at DeWitt, Arkansas, alongside Smith, his father-in-law, in late December 1891. The Passaic City Record reports that about two in the morning a masked mob entered the jail after the jailer, believing the sheriff was bringing in prisoners, opened the door. The mob demanded the keys, went to the cells and shot Gregory after Smith. The Madison Daily Leader reports that a dozen or more shots were fired, that all the men were killed instantly, and that a report they would be released on bond prompted the killing. None of these accounts says that the jailer or sheriff resisted the mob.
