Gregg T. Ireland
Gregg Ireland was a 47-year-old engineer who had moved in with his parents in Punta Gorda after losing his job, and his father described him as capable, helpful around the house and neighborhood, and a devoted fan of Wisconsin football. He died on August 24, 2015, after a disturbance in a cell in the medical unit of the Charlotte County Jail, where the sheriff's office said deputies restrained and moved him, and he was taken to Bayfront Health Punta Gorda, where he died. The medical examiner listed the cause as natural, due to alcohol withdrawal, and the sheriff's office said the death was from natural causes. His father has filed a federal lawsuit against the sheriff's office and the jail's medical provider, saying he wants to understand what mistakes were made.
