Graham White

died August 31, 1894 · Shelby County, Tennessee

Graham White, a Black man, was one of six men held in custody after an arrest and being taken in a wagon toward Millington, chained together with the others. Accounts say a mob of armed men, put at about fifteen in one paper and about fifty in another, stopped the wagon on the road near Millington around midnight on August 31, 1894, and shot the six prisoners. Deputy Sheriff Richardson is named as the officer escorting the party, and the papers do not say whether he or the guards resisted or gave up the men. An inquest jury found the men died at the hands of persons unknown, and the Pine Bluff Daily Graphic reported that an investigation was promised.
