Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela
Gilberto Rodríguez Orejuela died on May 31, 2022, while held at a federal prison, according to his lawyer, David O. Markus. Markus said Rodríguez Orejuela was known for outsmarting his rivals and called his death 'God has a new chess partner,' adding that the family was in their thoughts and prayers. In 2020 a judge denied his request for early release on compassionate grounds, and Markus said he had been suffering a range of health problems.
