Germany Martezz Butler, 34, collapsed in the general population area of the Wilkes County Jail shortly before 11 p.m. on January 12, 2024, a few minutes after an officer spoke with him. He was taken to Wilkes Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:23 p.m. Jail administrator Major Jason Whitley said there was no obvious cause of death, and the State Bureau of Investigation was contacted as is standard when someone in custody dies. The autopsy results, including toxicology, were still pending when the report was published.
