Gerardo Arche-Felix

57 years old · died October 2015 · United States Penitentiary Lewisburg, Lewisburg, Pennsylvania

Gerardo Arche-Felix, a 57-year-old man, had schizophrenia, his family said. He had been held at the Lewisburg federal penitentiary in Pennsylvania since April 2014, and his daughter, Jana Oman, said he had gone without his medication for much of that time and was falling apart. He wrote letters to her and told his sister, Kiana Arche, that he was afraid of his cellmates. He died in October 2015 of strangulation by ligature, which prosecutors and the death certificate list as a homicide, and prosecutors have since said they are investigating his cellmate for murder.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (neglect alleged). Prosecutors say his cellmate strangled him and are investigating the cellmate for murder; his family says he had gone without his medication for much of his time held there and had told his sister he was afraid of his cellmates.

Reported by: prosecutors; death certificate; his family.

Custody: Serving a sentence.
