George Whiteside
George Whitesides, a Black man, was held in the Colbert County jail in Sheffield, Alabama. A mob took him from the jail and hanged him on November 12, 1918, two days after Will Byrd was lynched in Sheffield, according to the Montgomery Advertiser. An Associated Press dispatch published the following day reported the hanging as the work of a mob that took him from the jail, and a later Interior Journal account placed the hanging from a tree near the jail. Some reports spell his name Whiteside, and a grand jury later indicted officials in connection with both Sheffield lynchings.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
