George Washington
George Washington, a Black man about twenty-two years old, was held in the McComb City town jail. According to the mayor, the jail was broken open shortly before the city marshal was to move him to the county jail, and he was taken out and found hanging from a tree near the Illinois Central Railroad shops early on a Friday morning. A coroner's jury found that he died by hanging at the hands of unknown persons. Other reports gave the date as November 15 and placed the hanging near Magnolia, Mississippi, so the date and place are disputed.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. The coroner's jury found he died by hanging at the hands of unknown persons after a mob took him from the McComb City jail, and the mayor said no one could say who broke the lock or took him.
