George Ware
George Ware was held in the jail at Florence, Alabama, in late April 1883. According to a dispatch from the government works at Muscle Shoals, printed in the Savannah Morning News, workmen first came to the jail demanding him and the crowd dispersed, then on a Saturday night a mob returned, moved the jailer's wife to another house, took Ware from the jail, and hanged him from a team in the depot building before shooting his body. Other short reports from the period, including a telegraph report from Florence, say a crowd overpowered the jailer and hanged him, but none says whether officers resisted or gave up the keys.
