Executed
George Travis
George Travis was hanged at the Tioga County jail in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, on January 15, 1885, the first execution carried out in the county, according to the Wellsboro Agitator. The paper reported that a physician pronounced him dead, but that his neck had not been broken. Rumors later circulated that he had been revived, and the Agitator dismissed them. A year-end review in The True Northerner dates the execution only to January 1885 and describes it as a judicial hanging at Wellsboro.
