George Swayze
George Swayne was a Black man who had served in the Louisiana legislature and later worked at the New Orleans Custom House. In mid-June 1890, in East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana, he was being held by officers when a mob took him from them and hanged him. A Minneapolis Tribune editorial, reprinted in the Bismarck Weekly Tribune, called the killing an anti-lottery murder, and a New Orleans dispatch linked it to his circulars urging Black voters to stay away from a special state senate election. The Daily Critic reported that local residents said they were angry he had come back after being warned to leave.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. Press accounts say a mob took him from the officers holding him and hanged him.
Reported by: New Orleans dispatch in the Morning Call (reporters); Evening Star (reporters); Minneapolis Tribune editorial, quoted in the Bismarck Weekly Tribune (reporters).
