George Parrott

died March 22, 1881 · Carbon County Jail, Carbon County, Wyoming

George Parrott was held in the Rawlins jail in Rawlins, Wyoming, in March 1881. On the night of March 22, 1881, a party of masked men took him from the jail, carried him to a telegraph pole by the railroad machine shops, and hanged him. A 1881 Cheyenne newspaper report says a mob took him from the jail, while a 2017 article says the jailer was held at gunpoint by the mob and did not stop them. Accounts differ on whether it took two attempts before he died, and the jailer's response is described differently across sources.
