George Parrott

died March 22, 1881 · Rawlins jail, Carbon County, Wyoming

George Parrott, known as Big-Nose George, was held in the Rawlins jail in Wyoming. A report in the Cheyenne Leader, relayed by the Memphis Daily Appeal, says a party of masked men took him from the jail at night, carried him to a telegraph pole by the railroad machine shops, and hanged him on March 23, 1881. The account says he showed a contrite spirit, often wept like a child, and sometimes broke down completely while he was held. A second report, in the American Citizen, gives the same date and place but does not describe how the jail's officers responded.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched

Reported by: A special to the Cheyenne Leader from Rawlins (reporters).
