George McKinney
Wiley Anette, Garfield McCoy and George McKinney, three Black men held in the Newton jail in Baker County, Georgia, were taken from the jail by a mob in June 1903. The Birmingham Age-Herald reported that the mob came to the jailer's house and overpowered him at the jail door, while the Montgomery Advertiser reported that he was forced at gunpoint to open the cell door. According to these reports, the three men were hanged from a tree about a mile from town and shot. A third account described a crowd storming the jail at noon and carrying several men several miles into the country, where they were hanged from a limb and shot. The Savannah Tribune reported the killings as happening early on a Friday morning in early July 1903.
