George Herson
George Herson, a 31-year-old Black man, was shot in a hallway on August 19, 1883, while under the escort of a sheriff, shortly after a hearing before a justice had ended. The Daily Globe reported that the shot came from behind the sheriff, from a man whose family was involved in the case, and that a struggle for the gun followed. Herson died about half an hour later. The shooter was arrested and held pending a coroner's inquest, and the paper said the officers did what they could to protect Herson.
