George Grant
George Grant, a Black man, was killed at the Darien jail in McIntosh County, Georgia, on September 3, 1930, after a mob took him from the jail. Solicitor General John Thomas Grice, appointed by the governor to investigate, said his preliminary inquiry found neither the Georgia National Guard nor Sheriff Poppell blameless. The person who killed Grant had not been identified, and Grice said evidence was apparently being concealed. Grice planned to present his findings to a grand jury in December, and the article notes that he disagreed with the adjutant general's finding that the militia was blameless.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). Solicitor General John Thomas Grice said his preliminary inquiry found neither the Georgia National Guard nor Sheriff Poppell blameless, and that evidence was apparently being concealed; the adjutant general had found the militia blameless, which Grice disputed.
Reported by: Solicitor General John Thomas Grice (outside investigators); adjutant general.
