George Ervin
George Ervin, a Black man, was held in the Salisbury jail in North Carolina in August 1906. A mob of about 2,000 people gathered at the jail, overpowered the officers there, went inside and took him and two other Black men out. They took Ervin to a ballground on the edge of town, and at midnight hanged him from a tree with the others. A relative of one of the men killed earlier urged the mob to return the men to jail and let the law take its course, but was ignored. Another newspaper account gives the number taken from the jail as five of six men, so the figures differ.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob of about 2,000 overpowered officers at the Salisbury jail, took George Ervin out and hanged him from a tree at midnight.
