George Ervin

died August 5, 1906 · Rowan County Detention Center, Rowan County, North Carolina

George Ervin, a Black man, was held in the Salisbury, N. C., jail in August 1906. According to the Salt Lake Herald, a mob of about 2,000 people gathered at the jail, overpowered the officers, went inside and took Ervin and two other Black men out. The mob took him to a ballground on the edge of town, and at midnight hanged him from a tree with the others. The same paper reports that a relative of one of the men killed earlier pleaded with the mob to return the men to jail and let the law take its course, but was ignored. An Edgefield Advertiser account says five of six Black men were taken from the Salisbury jail and lynched, but it gives no names or date.
