George Chevries was held in the jail at Pocahontas, Arkansas, and a masked mob of about 200 men broke into the jail, took him from his cell and hanged him in March 1901, according to several newspapers. Some reports say the men were looking for him after a town marshal was shot, and the sheriff tried to protect him but was overcome by the crowd, according to one account.
