George Carter
George Carter, a Black man, was held in the Paris, Kentucky, jail when about thirty to fifty men came for him in the early morning of February 11, 1901. Newspaper accounts say the men broke in the jail door, overpowered the jailer and took the keys, then dragged Carter from his cell and hanged him from an iron arch at the courthouse entrance. Accounts differ on the cause of death, with some reporting strangulation and others hanging, and a coroner's jury returned a verdict of death at the hands of unknown persons. The papers do not agree on whether the jailer resisted further or handed over the keys.
