George C. Wyche
Lieut. George C. Wyche was a Navy officer, a native of Virginia who had lived in Alabama and served in the Navy for fifteen years, and a paper of the time described him as generous and noble-hearted. The Boston Transcript, reprinted in the New-Hampshire Baptist Register, reported that he was found in North Market street on October 25, 1843, and taken by the watch to the watch-house under the new court-house. According to that account, an officer saw him lying down at 8:30 and about half an hour later found him hanging from the cell grating with his handkerchief, a death the paper attributed to deep mortification. Other accounts gave his age as 28 rather than 35, and the paper's explanation for his death is not confirmed by any other source here.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide. The Boston Transcript, as reprinted in the New-Hampshire Baptist Register, says he hanged himself with his handkerchief in the watch-house and that deep mortification prompted the act.
