George Burie
George Burie was held in the town jail at Crested Butte, Colorado, in February 1901, after being arrested on a warrant. The Florence Daily Tribune reported that when the sheriff went to the jail on the night of February 10, the light in his cell had gone out and he was found to have hanged himself with a piece of wire. The Daily Camera gave the date as February 11 and said he had strangled himself with baling wire, and it reported that townspeople had threatened to lynch him, which the Tribune said the authorities prevented. The two accounts differ on the date and the method of death.
