General Duckett
General Duckett, a Black man, was held in the custody of Sheriff John Johnson of Little River County, Arkansas, in March 1899, after he surrendered following a period in hiding. Newspaper accounts from a Texarkana dispatch dated March 21 say the sheriff was taking him from Rocky Comfort toward Richmond when an armed crowd overtook them a few miles out and took him from the officers. The crowd hanged him from a tree, and the reports say his body was then shot many times. One account instead places the taking at the Rocky Comfort jail, and the accounts differ on that point.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob took General Duckett from Sheriff Johnson's custody near Rocky Comfort, Arkansas, and hanged him, according to 1899 newspaper accounts.
Reported by: Texarkana press dispatch as printed in the Pine Bluff Daily Graphic (reporters); The Van Buren Press (reporters); New York Herald report (reporters).
