Gen. Lingan

Baltimore County, Maryland

Gen. Lingan was among a group of men placed in the Baltimore jail for their safety after a mob threatened them, according to a letter from Baltimore reprinted in the Fayette Spectator, whose writer describes him as a man of great influence in his county. The letter says the mayor and General Strieker had guaranteed the men's protection, but the troops ordered to guard the prison refused to act. It says a mob forced the jail at about nine in the evening and beat the prisoners with clubs. The letter states that Lingan never recovered from the beating and died in the jail.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (neglect alleged). An unnamed writer of a letter from Baltimore, reprinted in the Fayette Spectator, says the troops ordered to guard the jail refused to act when a mob forced it and beat Gen. Lingan with clubs.
