Gay

died March 30, 1863

Gay was a soldier, and the Chicago Daily Tribune reported that he spoke with feeling to fellow prisoners about changing their ways, talked with visitors and jail officers about a reunion, and trusted in the mercy of God. He was held in the county jail, and on March 30, 1863, he was taken from the jail to the place of execution and shot by a firing party in the presence of a crowd. The Tribune described him as calm and composed to the end, speaking with other prisoners and officers and praying before he died. Chaplains Rev. Mr. Griffith and Rev. Mr. Day visited him in his last days.

Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state
