Gary Showalter Sr.
Gary Showalter Sr., 64, was held at the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison. According to a criminal complaint, another man held at the prison attacked him in the prison kitchen on December 19, 2024, and he was taken to the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center, where he died on December 28. The complaint cites an autopsy that listed the cause of death as blunt force injuries of the head and the manner as homicide. The Daily Gate City reported that the prison's initial press release did not mention the assault.
