Gary Lee Sampson
Gary Lee Sampson, 62, died on December 21, 2021, at the federal medical center for prisoners in Springfield, Missouri, after years of end-stage liver disease, according to his lawyer and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. He was a native of Abington, Massachusetts. His lawyer said the government kept pursuing a death sentence even after he became terminally ill, and that his appeal addressed only his sentence. Relatives of one of the men he was linked to killing filed letters opposing the review of his case. In February 2022 a federal appeals court in Boston dismissed his appeal as moot, leaving the earlier judgments in place.
