Gary Calac
Gary Calac was 65. Before the pandemic his wife, Sandra Calac, drove regularly to visit him at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego County, and she said she could not believe he had gone so fast. He was taken to an outside hospital around New Year's Day 2021, and Sandra said she learned of it from other people held at the prison before staff contacted her. A prison doctor told her on January 7 that he had a blood clot in his lungs, and two days later she was told he had died of complications from COVID-19. Sandra said the prison should have notified her sooner.
