Garrett

died December 16, 1871 · Chicot County Jail, Chicot County, Arkansas

Three men, identified only by the surnames Garrett, Sanders and Dugan, were held in the Chicot County jail at Lake Village, Arkansas, in December 1871. According to the Morning Republican, citing county assessor Conway Barbour, a crowd took the three men from the jail and shot them. A later Jefferson Republican account, reprinted in the same paper, said a crowd of several hundred demanded the keys from the sheriff, who was ill at home, and that his wife handed them over before the men were shot a short distance behind the town. A 1877 Greenville Times report, reprinting an Arkansas account, dates the killings to December 16, 1871, and says suspicion fell on county officials, with a grand jury later indicting six of them. Other reports dispute the Jefferson account, and how the jail was entered is disputed.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A crowd took Garrett from the Lake Village jail and shot him, according to the county assessor as relayed by the Morning Republican.

Reported by: Hon. Conway Barbour, assessor of Chicot County; Morning Republican (reporters); Jefferson Republican (reporters).
