Garland Seemler
Garland Seemler, 19, was held in the Siskiyou County jail at Yreka, California. On August 26, 1895, a mob took him and three other men from the jail and hanged them, according to The Morning News, in the courthouse square. The Richmond Dispatch reported that the under-sheriff refused to give up the keys, and a deputy opened the jail doors while the mob broke the cell locks with sledgehammers. The Morning News said Sheriff Hobbs arrived as the hanging ended and was told by the mob that the job was finished. The Roanoke Times reported that he asked the men leading him to tell his family he was innocent, and other papers reported that his last words asked that his dear old mother be told the same.
