Died in jail or a lockup
Garfield Burley
Garfield Burley, a Black man, was held in the Dyersburg jail in Tennessee along with another man, Curtis Brown. On the night of October 8, 1902, a mob of about 500 people came to the jail and took both men, despite appeals from the criminal court judge, court officers, local ministers and citizens to let the law take its course. The crowd carried them to Newbern, Tennessee, where both men were hanged from a telephone pole. Several local men were later indicted as participants in the killings.
