Gabriel Garcia-Aviles, 56, was a grandfather who had lived in the United States for more than 30 years, according to members of Congress and his family's account. He was held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center in Adelanto, California, and died on October 23, 2025, after being taken to Victory Valley Global Medical Center in Victorville. ICE said hospital officials attributed his death to cardiac arrest from alcohol withdrawal. Members of Congress said the family was told of his condition only when he was near death, and that his daughter found him unconscious and intubated with dried blood on his forehead; they question ICE's medical care for people in its custody. The family says ICE told them only that he was in critical condition, and no clear cause of death has been officially given.
