Fry
Fry was a shoemaker and a husband and father of several young children in Greenville, Tennessee. In 1862, a Chicago Daily Tribune correspondent wrote that Confederate Col. Daniel Leadbeater took Fry and another man, Nashy, from the Greenville jail, tied them to a tree limb over the railroad track and had them hanged. The correspondent, writing as a Union supporter, says the bodies were left hanging and that passengers mocked them. No official record of the killings has been found, and the account is partisan, so the details of how the men were taken from the jail, and whether jail staff resisted, are not established.
