Frederick Cartwright

Frederick Cartwright, about sixty years old, lived with a wife and a large family on disputed Indian land in Waushara County, Wisconsin, and had been away from them for more than a year before he returned home. According to a Milwaukee Sentinel correspondent, reprinted in the Marquette Mercury and the New York Herald in March 1854, a crowd gathered at his house and an exchange of gunfire followed before he surrendered to officers on their assurance of protection. While the officers were taking him toward a justice for examination, about four miles from the Waushara County settlement, a group of men took him from them, tied him and hanged him from a tree. The accounts say friends took his body down that evening, and the report's details differ slightly between versions, as this is an OCR copy of the original text.
