Freda Kemper
Freda Kemper, 17, was held in the Lemont, Illinois, jail when she and another young woman set fire to their clothing, according to a Chicago dispatch printed in January 1911. The dispatch said the two were trying to take their own lives. Firemen broke down the jail doors to reach them and took them to Joliet, where Freda Kemper died.
Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide. A Chicago dispatch reported that she set fire to her clothing in an attempt to commit suicide while held in the Lemont, Ill., jail.
