Fred Smith Jr., 28, died on August 23, 2023, while held at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia. According to the Virginia Beach Sheriff's Office, a routine security check found him unresponsive in his cell. Deputies, jail medical staff and emergency responders tried to save him, and he was pronounced dead at 1 a.m. The sheriff's office said he died by suicide and that no foul play is suspected. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Norfolk will determine the official cause and manner of death.
