Fred Singleton
Fred Singleton, 81, died on October 6, 2025, in the infirmary of Kirkland Correctional Institution, a South Carolina state prison. The state Department of Corrections said he died of natural causes. He had been held on death row for more than four decades, the longest-serving person on the state's death row, and much of that time was spent in legal limbo after the state Supreme Court found him not competent to be executed. Some accounts give a different facility, the Broad River facility in Columbia, as where he was held, and report his age as 77.
