Frank Hall
Franklin Hall was held in the Putnam County jail at Cookeville, Tennessee. According to a Nashville Union and American account, reprinted in the Memphis Daily Appeal, an armed party came to the jail on Wednesday night, September 2, 1874, overpowered the jailer, and took him from his cell. The group shot him at the edge of town, and the account says they also freed two other prisoners while citizens of Putnam County worked to arrest the men involved. Other accounts say he was hanged rather than shot, and a New York Herald report attributes the killing to a group it describes as Ku Klux.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. The Nashville Union and American, as reprinted in the Memphis Daily Appeal, says a party of armed men overpowered the jailer, took Hall from his cell and shot him at the edge of town.
