Frank Embree
Frank Embree, a Black man, was held in the jail in Mexico, Missouri, and on Saturday, July 22, 1899, he was being moved by train toward Fayette. According to a St. Louis Post-Dispatch correspondent, a mob stopped the train near Higbee, took him from the officers, and hanged him from a tree at Steinmetz. The correspondent reported that Embree had asked to be taken to Kansas City to avoid a mob, and that the officers did not think this was necessary. Another account in The Osceola Times repeats that a mob took him from the officers and hanged him from a tree.
