Frank Atwood

66 years old · died June 8, 2022 · Arizona State Prison Complex-Florence, Pinal County, Arizona

Frank Atwood was 66. His lawyer said his mother was Jewish and fled Austria in 1939 to escape the Nazis, and that he was baptized in the Greek Orthodox church. Arizona executed him by lethal injection at the state prison in Florence on June 8, 2022, after the US Supreme Court rejected a final appeal from his lawyers. His lawyers argued that a degenerative spinal condition would cause him severe suffering on the gurney and asked courts to delay the execution, and The Times of Israel reported that he had claimed innocence. A priest accompanied him through the process, and his final words were a prayer for mercy for all of them.

Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state. His lawyers argued that a spinal condition would cause him severe suffering on the gurney, and that he maintained his innocence.

Reported by: Arizona Department of Corrections, Rehabilitation and Reentry (the agency that held him); Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich; his lawyers.
