Francisco Velez, 46, was held at the West Valley Detention Center in San Bernardino County, California, when deputies were alerted to a medical emergency on March 30, 2023. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said jail nursing staff and deputies were treating him when medical aid arrived, and he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The sheriff's department said its Specialized Investigations Division is investigating, and that the cause and manner of death are pending.
